Lync is a communication platform created by Microsoft. Lync provides instant messaging audio calls, presence information and video conferences. Lync 2013 has a version called Lync for Windows 8 that is optimized for touch screen devices. Unlike other communication platforms such as Skype, Lync is installed on a server and all data is stored on site. This feature is useful for corporate environments where firewalls restrict the sites that user can access from the local LAN.

Lync has many features that are useful for communication in a large organization. There is Group Chat that is easily installed. Group Chat allows multiple users to send messages and files to each other. Presence information is used to show the current status of the user. The statuses include available, busy and away. Lync can import contacts from Active Directory and Microsoft Outlook; this allows you to use the software without creating your contacts manually.

Lync provides conferencing abilities for both audio and video. Conferences are either prearranged or ad-hoc. All Lync Windows 8 installations support the H.264 SVC codec; this codec is used for High Definition video conferences and calls.
